At present, the increasing globalization in the world economy makes it essential for qualified specialists in various professional spheres to know English as the main international language. The necessity of finding adequate ways to meet the needs of modern society in competent specialists knowing English at a sufficient level highlights the importance of research focusing on non-language university students’ motivation for studying English. This article concentrates on determining the character and strength of non-language bachelor students’ motivation for learning English, studying the dependence of this motivation on the students’ experience in communication with native speakers of English, duration of studying the discipline and the type of educational resources used in learning the subject. This research employs N.C. Badmaeva’s modification of A.A. Rean and V.A. Yakunin’ method to analyze academic motivation. It has been proved that students learn English for travelling and leisure; their motivation to study the discipline is proportional to the variety and amount of their real communication in English; the most important form of this communication is written chatting with their peers on social networks. Taking into account the importance of this factor in motivation to academic activity, we should use it as the base for choosing the methods to teach English.
