Teaching phrasal verbs students of a non-linguistic university

The article is devoted to some aspects of teaching students of a non-linguistic university to use phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs represent a special layer of English vocabulary and are an important component of native speakers’ speech. Phrasal verbs are considered as a language material of increased complexity. The author is of the opinion that the level of proficiency in phrasal verbs is a kind of students’ communicative competence marker. The article contains a typology of phrasal verbs, accompanied with a linguistic commentary and factual material. The variability of methods and different approaches to teaching phrasal verbs are presented. The author comes to the conclusion that it is quite productive to apply both the grammar-translation and direct teaching methods in practice. As a confirmation, the author enunciates the existing internal and external criteria for the eff of teaching phrasal verbs.
