The article considers the influence of western game projects on the formation and development of the gaming industry in Russia in comparison with the USA, using the method of comparative analysis. The article is aimed at determining the reasons for the failure of the domestic industry. Special attention is paid to identifying common and specific elements in the structure of the Russian video game industry. The main events that occurred in the history of the domestic video game industry for 39 years (1984-2023), listing significant projects for the establishment of the industry, are described. A brief description is given for the formed system of genres, features and causes of the emergence of specific genres defined for game design in Russia. The article studies main differences in elements of the system of development of the game design industry in Russia and the USA. The considered elements: the development process, the relationship between publisher and consumer, the state of the labor market, marketing strategies, the financing of games, the technologies used, the reasons for the failure of gaming projects. The study identified that the chosen strategy of development of the video game industry, historical, cultural, and economic context negatively affected the state of the gaming industry in Russia. The domestic gaming industry is being studied in this context for the first time.
