The article is devoted to the problem of the crisis of social identity in modern Russia. To alleviate the crisis, the Government of the Russian Federation set a goal - strengthening the spiritual unity of citizens. The author conducted a study of secular and religious approaches to understanding spirituality in order to reveal their common ground. All the investigated definitions assume a person’s rejection of selfish motives. At the same time, a religious understanding of the concept, which is necessary for understanding the foundations of spirituality, is suppressed in Russian education in favour of a secular approach. The explanation of the purpose of spiritual and moral education of the individual included in the educational standard implies a meaning of the term “personality” that does not meet the conditions of anthropogenic perception. This problem also does not allow to realize the program of strengthening the spiritual unity of citizens. As a solution, the author suggests softening the secular accents in the wording of the concepts of “spirituality” and “personality”, which will ensure their adequate understanding in the spiritual upbringing of students necessary for the formation of a unified national community in Russia.
