Статья представляет собой историографический обзор, посвященный ключевым работам о неформальных связях и патронате, опубликованных на английском, немецком и русском языках. Автор приходит к заключению, что научный инструментарий теории патроната открывает новые горизонты изучения чиновного мира России рубежа XIX - XX вв.
