Competitive activity in sports and factors determining sports results

Introduction. The relevance of studying competitive activity in sports and sportsmen’s results is determined by great significance of the psychological factor in successful competitive activity and the necessity of examining the character of these factors’ impact and eliminating this impact. The problem is important due to the influence of psychological qualities on the sportsman’s prestart conditions, behaviour and results in the competitive activity. The essence of the problem lies in the changes of functioning of a certain sphere of the sportsman’s personality (emotions, attention, thinking, motivation etc.), which affect the sportsman’s performance in competitive activity. The objective is to reveal the factors of efficiency of competitive activity of highly qualified sportsmen. Materials and Methods. The methodological basis of the research includes A. N. Leontiev’s personality- and activity-based approach reflecting interrelation of personal qualities and results of the performed activity. The study was carried out from 2019 to 2022 via analysis of special literature, testing, observation, methods of mathematical processing of the materials. The total sample involved highly qualified sportsmen: twenty weightlifters and sixteen swimmers. Results and Discussion. A number of qualities reflecting psychological readiness influence the results of the competitive activity performed by highly qualified sportsmen. Conclusions. Increasing the level of the formed psychological readiness will ensure significant improvement of the results in the competitive activity.
