Some peculiarities of modal verbs in Indian English

The article is concerned with the grammatical category of verbal modality in Indian English, which is of special interest among other IE grammatical peculiarities due to a number of reasons. Unlike other verbal categories, it is not influenced by native Indian languages as there are no modal verbs in them. Besides, modal verb system has greatly changed in all English varieties in the late 20th - early 21st centuries, which could not but be represented in modern Indian contact Anglophone fiction and newspaper register. The author makes an attempt to classify the most characteristic modal verb usages as well as account for them.
