It is noted that in the framework of the existential approach, various aspects of human being are studied, among which the problem of self-understanding occupies a special place. It is indicated that self-understanding presupposes the acquisition of a new meaning of that existential knowledge of oneself that a person has acquired through self-knowledge. It is proved that for teachers of higher education, self-understanding acts as one of the factors ensuring the successful implementation of professional activities. In turn, creativity and professional activity can act as a means of promoting the disclosure of new abilities and qualities of a teacher, ensuring her freedom of expression and deepening self-understanding.
