The article discusses the main provisions of sustainable development in relation to urbanized areas. It is noted that one of the key factors in ensuring sustainable development of urban areas is the development of the service sector. At the same time, an analysis of the experience of the evolution of the service sector in Western countries showed that in this direction there are two main models - the model of production services and services for the population, as well as the information-industrial model. Based on the all-Russian classifier of types of economic activities, the authors have formed a space of services provided in urbanized areas. An analysis of a number of problems arising in the development of the service sector made it possible to identify key ones, including labor shortages, infrastructure problems and competition, the increased difficulty of satisfying customers, inequality in access to services, and an insufficient level of innovation. To level out existing problems, the authors proposed basic principles for sustainable development of the service sector, taking into account economic, social and environmental aspects, as well as interaction between various stakeholders. An analysis of statistics has shown that in modern Russia the service sector occupies a place corresponding to developed countries and has a tendency to grow. As a result of the study, a conceptual model of the development of the service sector was developed, which reflects the interacting elements, the main participants and the directions of their interaction. The presented model allows us to systematize the development process and ensure sustainable growth of cities.
