The aim of the article is to analyze content language integrated learning. It gives examples of research in the field of influence that writing and reading has on literacy development, thinking ability and meaning making. The article provides the comparative analyses of content language integrated learning and traditional approaches. It reviews the advantages of CLIL in developing overall competences. The article describes functional mechanisms of CLIL and some key factors needed for its successful implementation.
