The workshop based on the results of the young translators' contest held by a higher education institution for university students and high school students as a form of extracurricular activity control in higher education institutions is considered. The importance of extracurricular activity for academic process in higher education institutions is underlined. The goal of extracurricular activity is marked. The value of such a form of extracurricular activity as the young translators' contest is stressed. The worth of the young translators' contest which has been held by the faculty of linguistics, international collaboration and professional communication of the Institute for International Relations of Ulyanovsk State University among university and high school students for many years is emphasized. The workshop analyzing all stages of the process of the students' translation of the literary text entitled "Something Light" by Jack Wallsten from English into Russian including the source text analysis, the students' translations analysis and the editing recommendations is described. The efficiency of such type of work to form a number of different competences necessary for students' professional activity is noted. The usefulness of such workshops as a kind of practical lessons for the teacher to control the students' extracurricular activity is marked.
