The paper considered on the basis of review of the data from the archives the necessity of exploring consumer demand in the USSR in the 1950-to-1960-ies, for the purpose of improving the planning of goods production. The most widespread formats and methods of identifying demand in the population have been presented, with imperfections and problems arisen while applying them.
