На протяжении более ста лет мастэктомия была символом радикального лечения рака молочной железы. Разработанный в конце XIX века этот вид оперативного вмешательства претерпел значительные изменения в результате изучения вопросов распространения опухолевого процесса. В статье описаны исторические аспекты попыток хирургического лечения рака молочной железы, история создания радикальных подходов к лечению рака и органосохраняющего лечения. Описаны современные модификации мастэктомиив комбинации с одномоментной реконструкцией, такие как кожесохраняющая и с сохранением сосково-ареолярного комплекса, обсуждены показания и результаты их применения в современной хирургической практике.
