The article investigates the process of transition of nomadic and semi-nomadic population of Western Kazakhstan to settled way of life. Socio-economic and political factors contributing to the process of nomads settlement have been revealed. It also shows the economic impact of Russia on the development of nomad households, the transition to the cattle-farming form of economy in the Kazakh steppe.
