The article offers a brief analysis of the development of religious studies and theology in Russia, examines the most traditional ways for the Russian academic community to perceive religious studies as an academic field and theology as an academic field, as well as analyzes the conceptual problems and ambiguities that arise in the activities of modern religious scholars and theologians related to the status and place of the relevant disciplines in the structure of modern academic knowledge. The author of the article, basing on current statements of modern religious scholars and theologians, tries to find a consensus on the issues of the object, subject and methodology to further deduce basic ethical guidelines in the relevant fields of knowledge. This article, at the same time considering some internal problems of religious studies and theology as spheres of human knowledge, aims to briefly examine the scientific and near-scientific discourses that have developed around religious studies and theology in the past twenty years, and to offer on the basis of this consideration the most universal professional ethical principles that should guide the activities of a religious scholar and theologian.
