Mobile Robot Motion Using Cellular Automaton Model to Avoid Transient Obstacles

Mobile Robot Motion Using Cellular Automaton Model to Avoid Transient Obstacles

Kohei Arai, Steven Ray Sentinuwo

Статья научная

The obstacle avoidance is currently treated by methods that fall into two broad categories: global and local approach. This paper considers the obstacles whose velocity and direction cannot be easily predicted. Such obstacle is called transient obstacle. To avoid such kind of obstacle, we introduce a local path planning method for a robotics by using cellular automaton approach. The cellular automaton was combined with Dijkstra shortest path algorithm as global path planning to obtain a path for mobile robot to be able to avoid transient obstacle along the path. Using the proposed method, a scene in a typical corridor has been created. Moreover, this paper also evaluated two kinds of obstacle avoidance motion. First, the robot uses the “stop and go” method, which is the robot decreases its speed while encounter a transient obstacle. The second one is detour method, in which the robot makes a detour motion to avoid a transient obstacle. To coupe the drawbacks of local path planning, this paper also propose the enhancement of detour method. The simulation results show that in dynamic environment with transient obstacles, the “stop and go” method produces minimal collision with shortest-distance path. While, using the detour method generates minimal collision with time-minimal navigation path.

Model and simulation of proton exchange membrane fuel cell performance at different porosity of diffusion layer

Model and simulation of proton exchange membrane fuel cell performance at different porosity of diffusion layer

Yongsheng Wei, Hong Zhu

Статья научная

The proton exchange membrane fuel cell is an example of clean energy. Recently, a three-dimensional, steady-state non-isotherm mathematical model for proton exchange membrane fuel cell was developed for further exploration. This 3D model simultaneously takes into account the mass, momentum, energy, species, charge conservation equation as well as combines electrochemistry reaction inside the fuel cell. The simulation results reveals that it is easy to improve the fuel cell performance for higher porosity in the diffusion layer by speeding up the gas diffusion, reducing the concentration grads of gas, depressing the ridge board domino effect and falling current density grads.

Статья научная

We live in a world where we are exposed to everyday changes that information and communication technologies (ICT) give us impose. These changes are largely related to education, and so the introduction of ICT in universities as institutions of higher education, clearly changing the way it is implemented. The policy of "Goce Delcev" University (UGD) is to fully implement ICT in all segments of management, administration and teaching. For this purpose, several projects for e-learning implementation at UGD have been conducted. But, as much as important introduction is, the more important is the acceptance of new technologies in education. Therefore, we shall use a modified Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) as the research methodology. The purpose of this paper is understanding teaching staff acceptance and use e-Learning system (ELC) and investigating the influence of seven determinants (four UTAUT determinants, 2 additional determinants and one personal "self-confidence" determinant). A survey was administered to 92 respondents (teaching staff) to capture their perceptions of e-learning. The findings of this research show that among the seven UTAUT factors, the effort expectancy and facilitating conditions have the strongest effect of intention to use new technology. Also according to the survey, social influence and facilitating conditions are in strongest correlation with the behavioral intention and thereby the most influence on the behavior of participants for acceptance and use of the e – learning system.

Статья научная

Finite State Machines (FSMs) are mathemati-cal abstractions which have a rich use in computer appli-cations. If we build a FSM for software, then it becomes much easier and simpler to understand, debug and modify. The insights developed in FSMs have had great influence on various domains. FSM is as important as any other computer science tool. This paper minimizes the gap which currently exists between software development and the formal method of theoretical com-puter science. So importance of FSMs has been explored over various such domains in this article. These domains include spoken web technology that enables a user to access a massive network of voice sites through speech. Information transfer protocol for Vehicular Computing is another domain, where users can get on road support services using vehicular sensors and global position system. Adding on to the domain list, we have modeled FSMs for Ankle Monitor and Sensor Dust which are applications of mobile ad-hoc networks. Ankle monitor is primarily used to track movements of an individual through wireless communication and Sensor Dusts are tiny sensors which monitor the environment in which they are deployed. We have also modeled Palm Operating System, which is a mobile OS that runs on Linux kernel. This paper presents the FSM for the booting sequence and the user interface of Palm OS. To conclude with we have taken up the domain of satellite simulation and have presented a FSM for the steps involved in Satellite launching and Image Handling within a satellite. Therefore, by modeling a range of applications using FSM we attempt to add-on to the significance of this concept and at the same time provide a single document comprising numerous FSM models. This concept can be used by software developers for easy modeling of their designs and can further use it to verify and debug the model whenever required.

Modeling of Haze Image as Ill-Posed Inverse Problem & its Solution

Modeling of Haze Image as Ill-Posed Inverse Problem & its Solution

Sangita Roy, Sheli Sinha Chaudhuri

Статья научная

Visibility Improvement is a great challenge in early vision. Numerous methods have been experimented. As the subject is random and different significant parameters are involved to improve the vision, it becomes difficult, sometimes unsolvable. In the process original image has to be retrieved back from a degraded version of the image which is often difficult to perceive. Thus the problem becomes ill-posed Inverse Problem. This has been observed that VI (Visibility Improvement) is associated with haze and blur. This complex nature requires probability distribution, estimation, airlight calculation etc. In this paper a combination of haze and blur model has been proposed with detail discussions.

ChukwuNonso H. Nwokoye, Njideka Mbeledogu, Ikechukwu I. Umeh, Ihekeremma A. Ejimofor

Статья научная

Sensor networks are appealing targets for malicious attacks that invade the network with the aim of depleting the confidentiality, availability and integrity (CIA) features/parameters of neighboring sensor nodes. This is due to its open communication, minimal resources and its deployment in un-trusted, unguarded and unfriendly terrains. To restrict illegitimate users or malicious attackers (such as worms) network analysts have suggested network access control (NAC). Specifically, we apply NAC to wireless sensor network epidemic models in order to investigate distribution density, transmission range and sensor area/field. Our analyses involved analytical expressions of two sensor fields gleaned from literature. Additionally, we explored the possibilities of infectivity of sensor nodes at the exposed class using the two expressions for sensor field topologies. We also derived the reproduction ratios and solutions at several equilibrium points for the models. It is our hope that that our work herein would impact sensor deployment decisions for organizations that utilize wireless sensor networks for meaningful daily activities.

Modelling Online Admission System: A Multi-Agent Based Approach

Modelling Online Admission System: A Multi-Agent Based Approach

Ajay Auddy, Sripati Mukhopadhyay

Статья научная

We have proposed an integrated Web-based online admission system using multi-agent system and Web-based technologies. Every year, most of the Universities have to organise centralised admission for under-graduate courses of its affiliated colleges. The centralised online admission system is a major reform initiative in education sector to bring about greater transparency, efficiency and accountability in complicated and time-consuming admission process. It encompasses every institution under the university to accomplish the admission process where potential student community is involved. As a result of various agents’ involvement in the whole process, coordination and communication among them are the core issue which can be efficiently handled in a multi-agent environment. Thus dynamic behaviours of the agents reveal better results. Multi-agent systems represent a new paradigm for the development of distributed software. Preliminary implementation issues for this system have been discussed with Java Agent Development Environment Technology, a java-based software platform that provides middleware-layer functionalities which facilitate the development of agent-based application, at the end of the paper.

Modified integral sliding mode controller design based neural network and optimization algorithms for two wheeled self balancing robot

Modified integral sliding mode controller design based neural network and optimization algorithms for two wheeled self balancing robot

Ekhlas karam, Noor Mjeed

Статья научная

Two-wheeled Self-balancing (TWSB) mobile robot is considered to be highly nonlinear and unstable dynamic system. Unstable means that the robot is free to advance forward or backward without any forces applied. It must, therefore, be controlled. The purpose of this work is to design an intelligent nonlinear Modified Integral Sliding Mode Controller (MISMC) based on simple Adaline neural network for balancing a two-wheeled self-balancing mobile robot, in addition to improve the performance of this robot in tracking the desired trajectory. The simple Adaline neural network is used to enhance the performance of the conventional Integral Sliding Mode Controller (ISMC) which is an effective and powerful technique because it has a high performance. Also, in this work, a Modified Particle Swarm Optimization (MPSO) and Modified Cuckoo Search (MCS) algorithms have been proposed to find and tune the best MISMC parameters and hence enhance the performance characteristics of the robot system by reducing the processing time as well as improving the response accuracy through minimizing the tracking error of the mobile robot. The Integral Square Error (ISE) method has been used as a performance index for the two algorithms (MPSO, MCS) to measure the performance of the proposed controller. Numerical simulations show the efficiency of the suggested controller by handling the balance and tracking problems of the two-wheeled self-balancing mobile robot.

Modifying AODV to Reduce Load in MANETs

Modifying AODV to Reduce Load in MANETs

Gaurav Sharma, Manoj Singh, Prashant Sharma

Статья научная

We propose a routing algorithm based on AODV approach. We have modified AODV algorithm to obtain better performance. At the same time, we have tried to maintain the features of AODV algorithm by maintaining a backward compatibility in our proposed algorithm. Our algorithm tries to reduce RREQ packets which are broadcasted in original AODV to find routing paths. For this purpose our algorithm uses a location aware approach to find distance to sink node. It also makes use of busyness of nodes while selecting nodes to participate in route discovery mechanism. Also this scaling factor and busyness threshold can be made fixed for each node in the network depending on size and characteristics of the network.

Статья научная

Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata (QCA) is a radical technology, which works at Nanoscale. Due to its numerous advantages over the conventional CMOS-based digital circuits, researchers are now concentrating more on designing digital circuits using this technology. Researchers have reported various findings in this field till now. In this paper, a modular 2:1 Multiplexer has been designed followed by its application in the designing of 1-bit parallel memory. A 4:1 MUX is designed using cascading of two 2:1 multiplexers. This paper also incorporates a comparative analysis of the proposed circuits with some previous designs. This comparison indicates that the designed Multiplexer is showing a considerable reduction in cell count as well as in the area. Here the design and simulation of the circuits are done using QCA Designer Ver. 1.40. Power dissipation simulation analysis of the designed 4:1 multiplexer is also done using QCA Pro tool.

Motivations of Information System Students in Final Project and their Implications to Technology and Innovation

Lavy I., Rashkovits R.

Статья научная

In this study, we describe Information Systems students' decision making along their engagement with their final project regarding the complexity and innovations of their projects, and the technology they selected for the implementation. Data was gathered from projects' documentation; a questionnaire handed to the study participants, and from in-depth interviews conducted with representative group of them. Analysis of the data revealed that high achievers tend to develop innovative and complex final projects using major extensions of technologies learned in class while low achievers tend to develop simple and basic final projects using merely technologies learned in class or a minor extension of them. Surprisingly, some of the average and low achievers and none of the high achievers tended to use completely new technologies to gain relative advantage when applying for jobs, although this choice necessitated them to cope with large knowledge gaps.

Movement Abnormality Evaluation Model in the Partially Centralized VANETs for Prevention Against Sybil Attack

Movement Abnormality Evaluation Model in the Partially Centralized VANETs for Prevention Against Sybil Attack

Mandeep Kaur, Manish Mahajan

Статья научная

The VANETs carry many security concerns. One of the popular and dangerous attacks can be launched in the form of Sybil or Prankster attack, where an attacker inserts a fake position within in the cluster. The inserted fake node information can be utilized by the hackers in the case of selfish driver, traffic jams, selective collisions and other similar hazardous situations. To avoid such things the VANETs must be protected against such attacks. In this paper, a novel solution has been proposed to overcome the Sybil and prankster attacks on the VANETs. The new solution is capable of detecting the fake information injections by verifying the VANET node behaviour in the cluster. The behaviour of the node includes the direction, speed, pattern, etc. In case a node is found malicious, the whole cluster is reported against that node, and node is ordered to stop by the central control system. The proposed model has been developed using the random waypoint model. The random way point model is much closer to the real time VANETs. The random waypoint model has been compared against the reference point group model. The experimental results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Multi Objective Optimization Problem resolution based on Hybrid Ant-Bee Colony for Text Independent Speaker Verification

J. Sirisha Devi, Srinivas Yarramalle

Статья научная

Today major section of automatic speaker verification (ASV) research is focused on multiple objectives like optimization of feature subset and minimization of Equal Error Rate (EER). As such, numerous systems for feature dimension reduction are proposed. This includes framework coaching and testing analysis for every feature set that could be a time esurient trip. Because of its significance, the issue of feature selection has been researched by numerous scientists. In this paper, a new feature subset selection procedure is presented. Hybrid of Ant Colony and Artificial Bee Colony optimized the feature subset over 85% thereby decreased the computational complexity of ASV. Additionally an external record is maintained to store non-dominated solution vectors for which concept of Pareto dominance is used. An overall optimization of 87% is achieved thereby improved the recognition rate of ASV.

Статья научная

This paper proposed feature level fusion technique to develop a robust multimodal human identification system. The humane face-iris traits are fused together to improve system accuracy in recognizing 40 persons taken from ORL and CASIA-V1 database. Also, low quality iris images of MMU-1 database are considered in this proposal for further test of recognition accuracy. The face-iris features are extracted using four comparative methods. The texture analysis methods like Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Local Binary Pattern (LBP) are both gained 100% accuracy rate, while the Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and Fourier Descriptors (FDs) methods achieved 97.5% accuracy rate only.

Nature-Inspired Swarm Intelligence and Its Applications

Nature-Inspired Swarm Intelligence and Its Applications

Sangita Roy, Samir Biswas, Sheli Sinha Chaudhuri

Статья научная

In 1989 Gerardo Beni and Jing Wang first proposed the name "Swarm Intelligence" in their paper "Swarm Intelligence in Cellular Robotic Systems". Some remarkable observations of different researchers are studied in this paper, like the proximity principle, the quality principle, the principle of diverse response, the principle of stability, the principle of adaptability. To enhance the capabilities of robot and different systems, researchers started to exploit the behavior of natural systems. Swarm groups are governed by three rules, move in the same direction as your neighbor, remain close to your neighbor, and avoid collision with your neighbor .Characteristics of swarm groups are emergence and stigmergy. Different insects like ants, wasps, termites carry out a work locally for global goal with sufficient flexibility as they are not controlled centrally. In this paper the existing research works are analysed to show the behavior in social insects by using self-organization, positive feedback, negative feedback, amplification of fluctuation, multiple interactions. It has also been observed that these insects are almost blind and memoryless, still they communicate indirectly among themselves for stigmergic effect by using pheromone. Implementation of swarm intelligence in robotics i.e., swarm robots are narrated. The limitations of swarm robots as well as factors behind the success of swarm robotics have also been encompassed. Finally authors focus on swarm robots applications in telecommunication fields, civil engineering and digital image processing.
