Personality traits and early maladaptive schemas as predictors of suicidal risk in adolescent homosexuals

Because of stigmatization and social discrimination against the queer identity of individuals in many modern cultures, adolescents with homosexuality are particularly at risk of high suicide risk. The negative influence of social attitudes interacts with personal traits and cognitive schemes that can both exacerbate the effects of stress and perform protective functions. The purpose of the study is to analyze the impact of personality traits and early maladaptive regimens on suicidal risk in adolescent homosexuals. Materials and methods. 100 adolescents (М=14±2,1) were examined who matched at least one of the three criteria for homosexuality (homosexual attraction, identity, sex with persons of the same sex). We used a questionnaire of suicidal risk by T.N. Razuvaeva, Five Factor Personality Test and YSQ-S3R. Results. The structure of suicidal risk among such adolescents is characterized with high affectivity and social pessimism. The personality portrait of a teenage homosexual includes following predominant features: introversion, emotional instability, expressiveness, low self-control, affection. The leading cognitive schemes are the schemes "Abandonment / Instability", "Punitiveness", "Negativism / Pessimism", "Entitlement / Grandiosity".
