"Notes about the round-the-world travel" by E. I. Baranovsky as a historical source

This article is devoted to the analysis of structure and content of memoirs of the former Orenburg governor E.I. Baranovsky where he described his round-the-world travel in 1870 as the agent of the Russian society of shipping company and trade. The author shows the value of these notes as historical source which provides the basis for analyze not only aspects of the biography of the author, but also the features of everyday life and attitudes of people of his social surroundings, and the peoples of visited countries. E.I. Baranovsky’s memoirs became the subject of scholarly exploration for the first time.
