In the period from 1907 to 1913 when developing the pedagogy of free upbringing S. N. Durylin based his ideas on pedagogical views and experience of L. N. Tolstoy as voiced and practised in the 1960 and the 1870s. Gradually, from negating L. N. Tolstoy’s pedagogical ideas S. N. Durylin passed to recognizing them as fundamental principles in solving the problems of upbringing and educating rising generations.
