The influence of gasifying additives on phase composition of combustion products at self-propagating high-temperature synthesis of MAX-phases in Ti-C-Al system

Regularities of phase formation during self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) of MAX-phase of Ti 3AlC 2 composition in Ti-C-Al system were experimentally investigated. Maximal quantity of Ti 3AlC 2 phase was produced during the combustion of the initial mixture of powders of 3Ti + 2Al + 2C. Enter of gasifying carbon-containing additives in this mixture inhibits the formation of the MAX-phases. To obtain the porous MAX-phase in this system, it is necessary to use the gasifying additives, which do not contain carbon. The best result on the content of Ti 3AlC 2 MAX-phase in the products of the synthesis was achieved using titanium hydride TiH 2 as the gasifying additive.
