The article presents an overview of the leading ideas of the outstanding German teacher, recognized by UNESCO (1988) as one of the four teachers who defined the way of pedagogical thinking in the XX century. Features of development of the theory and practice of education at the turn of XIX-XX centuries, ideas of pedagogy of action and their theoretical and applied registration in G. Kershensteiner's works are described.
