The authors analyze the influence of religious and philosophical beliefs of a scholar on research work and choice of behavioral strategy in a scientific community. They describe a conflict among the representatives of Moscow and Petersburg mathematics schools in early XX century. They also examine the worldview and scientific activity of N. V. Bugaev, P. A. Nekrasov and D. F. Egorov.
