The article deals with Russian nihilism of 1860s as a socio-cultural phenomenon. Characteristic features of nihilistic mentality and nihilistic lifestyle are researched in connection with social and political changes in mid-nineteenth century Russia and with needs, interests and values of the new intelligentsia formed by raznochintsy.
