The article is devoted to the discussions on the development of the legal consciousness in Russian empire after the judiciary reform in 1864. The author defines the main periods in the study of this problem and the set of categories which were used in the analysis of the legal consciousness of the post-reformed society. The article traces the continuity between the views of the prominent thinkers in the imperial Russia and the conceptions of the contemporary Russian and foreign historians.
