Russian policy of christianization of the Kalmycks and its influence on the social relations in Volga Kalmyck Khanate (end of 17th century - middle of the 1730's)

The Russian government used the Christianization of the Kalmycks to extend its influence in Volga Kalmuck Khanate. Herewith the main attention was paid to the Christianization of the representatives of the Kalmyck nobility. But when it became evident that the most influential potential successor to the Khanate throne who could lead the Kalmycks to the agreement was the Buddist, the Empire authorities decided to reject their initial plans and to take the christened Kalmycks out of the territory of Volga Kalmuck Khanate.
