The results of Strashnaya cave field research in 2016

Studying of Pleistocene sediments in the Strashnaya cave has been continued in 2016 by Charyshsky Paleolithic team of IAET SB RAS. In order to clarify stratigraphic context of faunal and archaeological materials six square meters of layer 5 were excavated. Obtained collection includes 769 artifacts, numerous paleontological materials. During the excavation some new stratigraphic observations concerning of deposits in the central hall of the cave were done. New samples were taken for analysis. In the studied area of layer 5 two archaeological horizons has been allocated. Archaeological assemblages show similar technical and typological features typical for the local Middle Paleolithic. The primary knapping of the complex is characterized by radial and parallelflat-faced cores, focused on obtaining massive flakes with flat striking platforms. The tool kit contains scrapers, notched and denticulate tools, retouched point, and blanks with irregular retouch.
