In 1900-1901 Ivan Bunin was contributing for the “Scorpion” publishing house and the “Northern Flowers” almanac. However eventually he differed from Symbolists and initiated involving cooperation with “Knowledge” publishing company. In their memoirs and diaries I.A. Bunin and V.Ya. Bryusov speaks of each other with the Source study, textology, methodology”). significant negative. “The Balance” magazine, edited by V.Ya. Bryusov, presents objective characteristics of their artistic relationships, and controversies between Symbolists and I.A. Bunin. The analysis of the content proved that no one I.A. Bunin’s work was (re)published in the magazine (despite the fact that contemporaries partly continued to associate his name with Symbolists). “The Balance” editor and his fellow workers critically perceived I.A. Bunin’s works. K. Balmont, A. Bely, V. Bryusov, V. Hoffman, A. Kursinsky, B. Sadovskoy, and Ellis discussed his work on the pages of the magazine in different times. The translations of “The Song of Hiawatha” by H. Longfellow and “Poems 1903-1906” by I.A. Bunin were under consideration of these criticists. All publications about the writer may be divided into four groups: reviews of his original work; reviews of the translations; reviews of the collections of poems and stories and articles in which I.A. Bunin is mentioned, and insignificant notes. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of these materials allows articulating more clearly implicit reproaches which Symbolists addressed to I.A. Bunin. In this case, they form not just individual statements of the contributors, but general magazine politics and position.
