Patterns of tobacco use in a general hospital

Aims: to study prevalence of tobacco use in medical inpatients in Izhevsk and to identify associated factors. Method. The sample of 323 adult medical inpatients was composed. The prevalence of current smoking in our sample was 76.9 % in men and 22.2 % in women. Correlates of tobacco use were male sex, age of 18-39 years, lower level of education, and unemployed status. Tobacco use had a high comorbidity with alcohol dependence and diseases of the digestive and respiratory system. Conclusions. Prevalence of tobacco use was high. Taking into consideration associated factors, physician can improve recognition and treatment of tobacco dependence in medical inpatients.
