Springer's process during fight against the Russian influence in Sweden in 1746-1747

Бесплатный доступ

During the elections to the Swedish parliament of 1746-1747 the Russian diplomacy made an unsuccessful attempt to influence elections and to replace the government. The supporters of Russia connected with the Russian ambassador Korf suffered a crushing defeat. Their leaders were either displaced from their posts or arrested as a result of lawless actions of their opponents. The author focuses on the arrest and the investigation over tradesman Christopher Springer who was the intermediary between the Russian ambassador and Swedish opposition. Springer was arrested without any proofs of guilt, but, despite it, he was condemned on life imprisonment without court sentence. The attempt of intervention resulted in the change of the Russian ambassador in Stockholm, and the British allies of Russia broke off diplomatic relations with Sweden because of violence over the English envoy who tried to hide Springer in his house.
