Criminal liability for match fixing - legislative regullation challenges

Introduction: The article is dedicated to the analysis of art. 184 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal influence on the results of sports). The analysis of objective and subjective signs of illegal influence on the result of an official sports competition is carried out. The issues of legislative regulation of this crime are considered. The author investigates various scientific points of view related to the interpretation of the disposition of this norm and gives recommendations for its improvement. Materials and Methods: The regulatory framework of the study is formed by the Russian criminal law norms regulating the field of sports. The methods used in this research are the logical legal method and the formal-legal method. Results of the Study: The author offers a novel approach to the qualification of the crime described in the art. 184 and the ways to clarify certain provisions of law regarding match-fixing. Findings and conclusions: An analysis of the criminal law norms has shown a lack of common understanding and unified interpretation of the elements of a crime described in art. 184 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The author concludes that those circumstances significantly reduce, inter alia, the effectiveness of prevention, detection, and investigation of these crimes.
