The subject of the article is the theoretical discussion in the magazines "The Nineteenth Century" and "The Contemporary Review" in 1880s - 1890s on the problems of the British expansion in Africa. The author attempts to construct the theoretical model of the British strategy in the European powers' "struggle for Africa". British politicians, businessmen, missionaries, civil and military officers constructed the complex and flexible model of colonization of distant regions of interior Africa.
