In the work of I. S. Ivanova, the role of compliments in the embodiment of the phatic and communicative functions of language is investigated. The material is W. Shakespeare's sonnets and one text by Michelangelo. The author points out that in order to achieve the goal of establishing and maintaining contact, a compliment must be made skillfully. At the same time the author believes that the study of these linguistic phenomena in the works of the masters of the Renaissance can be both valuable in itself and interesting for the history of art, aesthetics, the history of the development of language and etiquette.
