The problem of determination of the borders and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Iraq

For the Iraqi state which was formed in its modern borders during the years of the British Mandate, political instability and uncertainty are still characteristic. The unsolved problems of ethno-confessional, geopolitical and economic character, which continue to sever Iraqi society to this day, are largely rooted in the mandate period. One of the problems of this kind was the question of defining the borders of a new state. This article examines the history and political context of the formation of the state borders of the Kingdom of Iraq, the successor of which is modern Iraq. An analysis of how the proposed borders could ensure the peaceful development of the newly formed state and its immediate neighbors concludes that the borders designated by the Europeans hardly correlated with the existing ethno-confessional and economic characteristics of the peoples inhabiting these territories. First of all, they corresponded to the interests of the colonizing countries, in this case England.
