The article presents the results of a study of the activities of the Hungarian budget airline “Wizz Air”, one of the leaders of the European passenger air transportation market. The budget segment of the air transportation in the structure of the European market has demonstrated a high rate of growth and development in the period from 2009 to 2019. In 2009, the share of budget airlines in the structure of the European market did not exceed 15%, the results of operations for 2019, the total passenger traffic of the European budget airlines approached 50%. The low-cost airline segment has become a key driver of the growth of the European passenger air transport market. In the context of overcoming the crisis of 2020, due to the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic (the introduction of temporary restrictive and prohibitive measures for international air traffic), the global drop in the roar exceeded 70%, however, in the regional structure, the total drop in passenger traffic is lower than the average. It is important to note that budget airlines concentrate on performing regular passenger flights of short and medium length (about 500 to 2000 km). The result of overcoming the crisis in 2020 may be the strengthening of the role and influence of budget airlines on the structure of the European passenger air transport market. Thus, the Hungarian budget airline “Wizz Air” has all the grounds for effective post-crisis development.
