Translation of the article: Paul Mattei “The relationship of St. Ambrosius of Mediolanum with the emperors in 383–388: Magnus Maximus and Valentinian II”

The article presents an overview of the activities of St. Ambrosius of Mediolanum in connection with the political vicissitudes in the Roman Empire during 383–388 A. D.: his relationship with the usurper Maximus, whom he twice visited as ambassador from Milan in context of his dispute with Simmachus, the upholding of the right of Christian communities in using of basilicas and the acquisition and transfer of the relics of saints Gervasius and Protasius.
