Experience of reconstructing a towerlike structure at the Dubki settlement

Ancient Roman towerlike constructions are one of the most visible features of the man-made landscape in the Abrau Peninsula. The area of the two-chamber towers dating to the early Roman period - praesidia or fort-gates - is specific because it is linked to the peripheral areas of the Asian and European Bosporus. This study is attempting to recreate the exterior look of the towers excavated in 2005-2009. These towers are located deep into the Anapa valley of Maskaga (the Gorguipia khora) on a promontorylike ledge of the eastern slope of Mt. Maskaga. Numerous ethnographic and historical analogies from the piedmont areas of the Central Fore-Caucasus and the Near East may give momentum to consistent and complete reconstruction. The study shows that despite the uniformity of type, towers could be erected in different variations which depended on existing needs and landscape features (for example, the size of the promontorylike ledge). The structure, for instance, could have a different number of levels, a two-level structure had the minimum number of stories.
