Russian vs. foreign category in A.P. Chekhov's short stories

This paper discusses the Russian vs. Foreign category and reveals the features of the ethnic Other representation in the consciousness of the perceiving character and the author in A.P. Chekhov's prose. Analysing two short stories entitled «Whistlers» and «Aborigines», the author of the article concludes that us vs. them opposition is constantly present in the character’s mind while it is absent in the artistic consciousness of the author, and that leads to the author's mockery of the character’s point of view.
