The article examines the portrait of a Russian teacher of the late XIXth - early XXth centuries, presented in the publications of Vasily Rozanov. The philosopher was able to draw a vivid image of a typical schoolteacher, many of whose features have not lost their relevance today, in part due to his own teaching experience in Russian gymnasiums. The author turns to the study of the question of what importance Rozanov attached to the personality of a teacher in the development of the school education system and lists the philosopher’s recommendations, the implementation of which, in his opinion, should have changed the attitude of both the state and the public towards teacher.
