The article analyses the image of the German romanticist Novalis’s mother in the Penelope’s Fitzgerald’s novel “The Blue Flower”. The battle between heart and mind lies at the centre of emerging after the French Revolution Romantic movement caused young poet’s disagreement with his parents’ perspective. The image of timid and tender Mother who loves her children but is submissive to her authoritarian husband is researched within the context of “the women’s issue” characteristic of the female literature of the XX century.
