Within the framework of this article, the role of the functioning of special economic zones in the innovative development of the country as a whole, and not only the region of presence, is investigated. To date, there has been a certain practice of developing these zones, which has both supporters and opponents of their functioning due to inefficiency. To date, there are more than forty zones, but the list is changing, some are being abolished, others are being created. There are various benefits in special economic zones, including basic taxes. The article presents a correlation and regression analysis of the relationship between the indicators of the functioning of special economic zones in the whole country with the indicators of innovative development. A strong positive relationship was revealed between the revenue of residents of the zones with the volume of GDP, the volume of innovative goods shipped, the volume of costs for innovative activities, research and innovation. A negative relationship was found with the relative indicators characterizing innovation activity. There is a weak relationship between the revenue of residents of the zones with the volume of internal costs in the field of nanoindustry, the number of patents granted and the share of investments in fixed assets to GDP. The directions of improvement are proposed.
