The article presents the results of estimating the contribution of external causes of death in the value of life expectancy in Russia and Vologda region by determining eliminated reserves of mortality. It was found that the external causes of death in the whole country and in the region are on the third position by size of demographic losses, they “take away” from life expectancy of 1.3 and 1.45 years respectively. Injuries of undetermined intent, suicide and transport accidents within the class “external causes of death” lead on the value of damage caused to life expectancy in Vologda region. However, there is significant gender and age differentiation of losses: for example, suicide and injuries of undetermined intent due to the peak of the damage at young ages involve the most demographic and, as a consequence, the socio-economic losses.
