This article presents the results of the ecological varietal testing of alfalfa in the arid conditions of Western Kazakhstan. The western Kazakhstan region differs sharply from the soil and climatic conditions from other regions of Kazakhstan, naturally, in such complex ecological conditions, the varieties that will fully be able to solve the problem of overcoming the negative complex influence of the limiting factors of the environment, strictly specific for the zone of a particular zoning. From bean grasses takes a leading place, being the main source of vegetable protein. Thanks to the productive longevity and the ability to assimilate atmospheric nitrogen in grass mixtures, it increases their yield, stabilizes it by years and increases the period of use of the grass stand. According to the protein content, it occupies one of the first places among green forages. The main goal of the scientific work is a systematic study of the selection material of alfalfa, with the identification of sources of valuable traits, properties based on ecological selection and the creation of new competitive and patentable varieties adapted to the agroecological conditions of our region. The article summarizes the results of the ecological varietal testing of alfalfa in the selection of the Scientific and Production Center of Grain Farm named after. A.I. Barayev, Kazakh Research Institute of Agriculture and Plant Growing, the Karabalyksky Agricultural Experimental Station. Yields of green mass, seeds and dry mass are given some quality elements, indicators of biometric accounts, the structure of the crop is analyzed, for 5 years (2013-2017). The result of the long-term ecological strain testing is the transfer in 2017 to the State Variety Test of the alfalfa variety “Northwest” (L-1343) created jointly by Scientific and Production Center of Grain Farm named after A.I. Baraev. At the present time, the Ural Agricultural Experimental Station continues its work to assess and identify the best varieties and varieties of alfalfa in the nurseries of ecological variety testing, adapted to the arid conditions of Western Kazakhstan.
