In the second half of the 13th century BC the Assyrian army undertook a successful military campaign against the territory of the former state Hanigalbat. The article discusses the reasons which encouraged Tukulti-Ninurta I at the beginning of his reign to go against the countries located to the North of Assyria. Analysis of Assyrian Royal inscriptions and Royal correspondence allows us to specify the localization of some geographical names mentioned in the first campaign, and to consider various hypotheses about the number of military campaigns which in fact were undertaken by the Assyrian king. The reinforcing of Assyria on the conquered Mitanni territories apparently further led to the deterioration of its relations with the Hittite Kingdom.
