Archimandrite Cyril (Nachis; 1920-2008) is one of the prominent clergymen of the Russian Orthodox Church of the 20th century. For a long time, Fr. Cyril served as the spiritual father of the St. Petersburg Diocese and the St. Petersburg Theological Academy. It is in this status that he is known to many contemporaries. At the same time, Archimandrite Cyril, after graduating from the Leningrad Theological Academy and Seminary, for two years - from 1963 to 196 - taught history of the Ancient Church and Hebrew in his alma mater . In addition, Father Cyril carried out various assignments of the Academic Council and the rector of the St. Petersburg Theological schools. This article examines the research and teaching activities of Archimandrite Cyril based on archival materials. Particular attention is paid to Father Cyril’s Candidate of Theology thesis, his articles on the pages of the Journal of the Moscow Patriarchate , as well as his reviews of the Candidate’s theses of graduates of the Leningrad Theological Academy. Based on the materials studied, it is concluded that Archimandrite Cyril, an expert in several European languages, could have become a prominent scholar and an outstanding specialist in a number of disciplines and areas, including the history of Local Slavic Churches, if after two years of teaching he had not been transferred to a rural parish.
