The sustainable development of regions is a common problem in their economic, environmental and social sectors. Waste management of the heat and power complex from the point of view of economics, ecology and nature management is a special problem. Its solution, for example, in the heat and power complex, is possible within the framework of a synergistic approach involving the capabilities of university science and the business community. The activities of educational and scientific organizations are also socially significant in terms of the formation of sustainable thinking among students and the population by translating the principles and provisions adopted at the state and international level, while involving students in scientific work in priority areas of the "green economy" as part of the implementation of the project approach. The search for new solutions and the development of a development strategy is impossible without the organization and implementation of scientific projects implemented by research teams and collaborations and aimed at solving applied environmental problems. The leading scientific schools of the Tver State Technical University (established as the Moscow Peat Institute) deal with the problems of environmental management, ecology and processing of man-made waste. The article examines approaches to the management of scientific, innovative and educational activities in the field of environmental management at the university. Directions for processing ash and slag waste are analyzed. The processes of scientific, innovative and educational activities within the framework of individual R&D in this area are described. Educational and scientific activities that contribute to the “greening” of the entire economy are provided in the project by the integration of processes that meet the interests of social development.
