The article is devoted to the research of the role of the general Alexey D. Butovsky in the development of socio-humanitarian aspect of the physical education scientific theory. The authors described his contribution as a founder of the Olympic movement to understanding the historical, cultural and pedagogical fundamentals of physical education as a socio-cultural phenomenon. Special attention is paid to the demarcation problem in natural-science and social humanitarian aspects of scientific research in the field of physical education and sport.
