The paper presents the results of the analysis of colour symbolism in the novel «Nyanya iz Moskvy» («Nanny from Moscow») by the prominent Russian emigration writer Ivan Shmelev. The author concludes that color designations play an important role in the creation of stylized folk speech in the novel, they help to understand both the storyteller's perception of the world and the writer's own ideas. «White», «black» and «golden» constitute the colour core of the novel. One of the author's favorite means of expressiveness is based on colour contrasts, which are used for the description of portraits, phenomena and events.
