The article analyzes archival documents of the cultural and national meeting of 1926 on the issues of self-identification of the Buryat people. The central items on the agenda of the meeting were questions about the language and nationalization of the Buryat school. The cultural-national meeting of 1926 was a historical event that brought together representatives of different Buryat tribal and territorial groups with unequal cultural level for the first time. The decisions made at this meeting strengthened and unified the trends for nation-building and cultural growth. In general, the socio-political policy regarding the language issues was determined in the context of total modernization of the Soviet state and society. The relevance of the article lies in the fact that in order to analyze the current state of the Buryat language and develop the language policy in the Republic of Buryatia, it is necessary to take into account historical experience, in particular, the materials of this meeting, its resolutions and decisions that determined the further development of the language situation.
