The methodology of field research in the mountainous area (the case of the Uzundara Hellenistic fortress)

The paper describes methods employed during comprehensive fieldarchaeological research in the conditions of high mountains in Uzundara, which isa Bactrian fortress of the 4th-2nd centuries BC. The research methods include non-invasivescanning of the sites (geo-radar studies); unearthing of the walls on the external andinternal faces, keeping the turf on the upper rib intact; replenishment of the turf on thewall sections where it was not preserved; reinforcement of the inclined walls by erecting‘patch’ side walls; reconstruction of poorly preserved walls by retrofitting the masonrywith the use of the dry method; tablet-based recording of surface finds.
