In the article, a solution to the problem is proposed by creating associative links based on the data of an etymological study. The relevance of studying this topic lies in the fact that in professional educational organizations of a non-linguistic orientation, the discipline “Foreign Language“ is not a specialized subject, and it is required to search for effective means of expanding vocabulary that will help students to become involved in the process of learning a foreign language. The article presents the data obtained as a result of a learning experiment, which took place in two stages: the stage of mechanical memorization of foreign words and the stage of memorizing words with elements of etymological research, independent search for a solution. The indicators at the second stage are statistically higher than at the first, which allows us to draw the following conclusion: etymological research makes the process of memorizing new words more efficient.
